Vadym Pozharskyi, Advisor to the Board of Directors at Burisma Holdings, Ukraine’s largest independent gas producer, joined discussions with the US Ambassador to Ukraine Geoffrey R. Pyatt.
During the meeting, Ambassador Pyatt briefed the USUBC and largest foreign investors in Ukraine on current political situation in the country and the US state programs aimed at supporting reforms in Ukraine. In particular, Mr Pyatt stressed the importance of reforming the energy sector. Taking into account how much the industry is contributing to the country’s GDP, it could serve as a driver for economic growth, along with agriculture and infrastructure projects. Ambassador Pyatt stressed the need for constructive cooperation between Ukrainian government and international organizations, including the IMF, the EBRD and the European Commission on energy security strategy and country’s energy resources.
“We are grateful to Mr Pyatt for his ongoing support for Ukraine’s energy sector in the international arena and promoting the reform process in the country. The US expertise is in the energy sector is very important to Ukraine. The US is an example of how the country can create its energy security and at the same time strengthen its political independence. For over 24 years, Ukraine pursued a strategy to replace domestic gas with imported one. Today, the Ukrainian government and business are willing to offer a completely new strategy for energy independence by developing domestic natural gas reserves that amount to circa 5 trillion cubic meters. With existing consumption levels, Ukraine will manage to meet its own needs for the next 100 years. The US experience in the promotion of investment programs in the energy sector can and should be adopted in Ukraine”, – noted Advisor to the Board of Directors at the company’s Vadym Pozharskyi.
Based on Burisma Holdings’ example, Mr. Pozharskyi highlighted the importance of reforming the Ukrainian energy sector and the impact of changes on gas producers. According to him, in 2016, the company plans to reach production levels of 1.8 billion cubic meters of natural gas.
The meeting with the US Ambassador to Ukraine Geoffrey R. Pyatt in Kyiv took place on the eve of the annual USUBC meeting in Washington on March 30, to be attended by the President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko. Burisma is also planning to join the event, and fully support measures aimed at strengthening energy security of Ukraine.
